“Humility means to live as close to the truth as possible.   It does not mean groveling or finding the worst possible things to say about ourselves.  Humility is, in fact, filled with power to bring forth life.”

-Richard Foster

News/Timelines/Due Dates

Teacher of the Year – After we began the process for TOTY, the county asked us to hold off as they were changing the process.  Turns out that the process did not change at the local level but each learning community will select finalists.  Our timeline to complete our local selections is very short so we are going to do the process a little differently.   We had many nominations with three finalists.  I will be sending out an anonymous survey where you will vote once for your favorite choice.   Our three nominees are…Erin Hoerr, Michelle Potts, and Gemma DeVita.

On Tuesday, 2/26 and Wednesday, 2/27 6th grade teachers will be giving the creativity test.  Slips will be put in your boxes on Friday to give out Monday morning.  Please note that this testing time will be during the first 6th grade connections period.  The test will  last approximately 40 minutes.  All students are not testing in the same location or on the same day, so please tell them to read their slip carefully.

On Wednesday 2/27 there will be a small group of students who will take a short mental ability test during 7th grade connections.  You will also receive a testing pass from Ingrid.  Please ask them to take note of the location and time of testing.

On Friday 3/1 a large group of 7th graders will be taking the long mental ability test that takes about 2 hours.  This will begin at the conclusion of PRIDE, so students should report at that time.  This testing, which typically takes place in the media center, will be in Maria Purwin’s room.

Verification Forms -You may run your process beginning today, Monday, February 25th "After each period" or beginning at the end of the day today

Dates for processing are: 1/25/2013 - 2/25/2013

Remember to "Show Last Teacher Only"

The Verification Form is due back to Debra by Wednesday, February 27th

PRIDE – This Friday, March 1st will be silent reading during PRIDE.    The following week, March 8th we will return to advisement with another student choice lesson.  This will be like last week’s lesson where you and your students choose the topic you want to discuss.  The folders will be placed in the mailroom again late in the week so you can pick up your lesson for March 8th.

The 7th & 8th grade Bands will be attending the GMEA LGPE(Large Group Performance Evaluation) on Thursday, March 21st at Douglas High School.  These students will be gone for most of the day.  Rosters and specific times will be sent a little later but wanted to give everyone a heads up on the date.

Where is Livingston?

Kenny Ludlow says…Hard work, passion, and love are words that come to mind when I imagine Robyn Magnussen sitting in her office punching away at the computer while the room is full of students who are working to catch-up on their classes.  It’s the words I think of when I see Robyn sitting with these kids in the rotunda during their lunch times and it’s the words I think of when I hear her talk to them about their potential.  It’s the personal relationships she takes the time and energy to build with her group that allows her to administer “tough love” and still be loved and respected by those students.  Each day Robyn steps up to the plate with her kids not knowing if she’s going to hit a homerun or strike out.   I appreciate her and thank her by presenting her with a little one on one time with Livingston.

Vision input –We have narrowed down the vision statement to engaging students through rigor, relevance and relationship.   Over the weekend, I realized that maybe we need to broaden students to learners to encompass staff and parents.  So, the new statement would be:

Engaging learners through rigor, relevance and relationship

Let me know your thoughts

PRIDE - On Friday, Feb. 22nd we will be doing student choice lessons for the PRIDE.  This week the choice is yours!   A few weeks ago you and your students took a survey choosing two topics you would like discuss in future PRIDE lessons.  This week will be the first of those lessons that you chose.  Topics may include Cyber Bullying, Making Good Choices, Self-Advocacy, Teasing and Harassment, Top Ten Middle School Issues, or Honesty.  Copies of each lesson will be placed in the mailroom mid-week.  Please pick up the lesson that corresponds with your first choice.  If you do not remember which lesson you chose, please see the PRIDE liaison for your grade level.

Where is Livingston?

Fran Meredith says…Kenny Ludlow deserves a visit from Livingston because of the recent impact he made on a student.  The young lady was showing declining behavior and attitude in his class so Kenny took her into the hall for a private chat.  He explained how much he believed in her and her ability.  The young lady’s mom called me the next day to express her gratitude.  She was so impressed that Kenny took the time to have a positive one-on-one conversation with her daughter about a potentially negative situation.  The mom shared that her daughter was overwhelmed by Mr. Ludlow’s support and has set a personal goal to improve her behavior and academic performance in his class.

Kenny’s support of his students extends to the time he puts in as the “go-to” 8th grade Hospital Homebound Teacher and his unending flexibility with students who need work extensions due to extenuating circumstances.  He has a natural ease with his kids that is greatly appreciated!

 Where is Livingston?

Tim Anderson says, “This week Livingston the Lion is being given to Fran Meredith.  It’s hard to pass by Fran without feeling a little more cheerful about your day.  If you’re lucky enough to have an 8th grade counseling question or problem then you’ll really see her in her element.  Her positive attitude and outlook shine through crabby kids and cranky parents.  Her dedication to helping students (and helping teachers help students) is obvious every time you walk in her office or pass her in the hall.  If you have a horrible boyfriend problem or a horrible schedule problem, she’s the one to see.  Thank you Fran for the countless other unseen things you do to keep our best and brightest at their best and brightest, and for doing it with a smile!

Happy Birthday

Pep Talk –  If you have time check out this pep- talk!  Thanks for sharing Ashley.

Caught Being Good – Don’t forget to utilize the “Caught Being Good” slips.  If you are out of forms, you can get the master on the server, go to the team leader or pick up some blank forms in the mailroom next to the “Caught Being Good” jars.  We particularly would like to see more from seventh and eighth gradeJ!

Fond Farewell - Our wonderful custodian Jerry will be leaving us at the end of the week.  He will begin a new role as Head Custodian at Barnwell Elementary!!  Please congratulate him and know how much he will be missed.  Jerry takes enormous pride in his work and it shows!  He will be missed but we wish him the best!

Academic Bowl – Our team came in second place at the Night at the Museum event Saturday night.  Way to go.

Pride - Sometime this week, please share your feedback of last Friday’s team building activities.  These were new activities and we would like to know how they worked for you or what can be changed to improve them for future use.  We would like to be able to use these activities on a larger scale with multiple groups or maybe even entire grade levels at a time.  Give us your feedback – we want to hear from you.  Next week (Friday, February 8th) in PRIDE, we will have silent reading.  Looking ahead, Friday, Feb. 15th is a school holiday so there will be no PRIDE.  We will resume the following week with the student choice lessons – make sure you have returned your surveys to your PRIDE liaison so you receive the correct lessons.  Thanks!

Where is Livingston?

Beth Van Riper says, “I am passing Livingston on to Tim Anderson! Tim creates great ensembles, bringing real world musical experience from outside the classroom as he performs in a variety of groups outside of school. He is responsible for our state recognized orchestra program and the many students who qualify for all-state orchestra every year.

Tim happily helps throughout the school with any task, is a great person to bounce ideas off of or assist with details, is responsible for the 6th grade rotation at the beginning of the year for Connections; he helps with sound needs for assemblies/events, coordinates all-state auditions, has been the director for the Fulton Co. Youth Orchestra, organized the turkey trot this fall at AMMS, and is our resident DJ/emcee for events at AMMS.

Tim runs marathons. He loves his motorcycle, cars, wife Trish (not necessarily in that order).  Tim can play virtually any instrument and can often be found perched on top of the Connections hall garbage can strumming one of the original compositions that he has written for his band, Jackson County Line.  Tim has a great sense of humor and has been behind several “unsolved” AMMS mysteries involving golf carts…

Commitment to Excellence

As you know, we give out a county Commitment to Excellence coin each month based on the leadership essentials.  This month’s medal goes to Michelle Hains.  Michelle truly exemplifies the traits of creating value for our customers and leading by example.  Not only is Michelle an innovative teacher, she is actively involved in the school community, especially anything to do with the arts.  She puts flyers on lockers of students who will be participating in a sporting event.  Most recently, former AMMS teacher Stephanie Haga reached out for help for an eighth grade Science team in her learning community struggling to get by.  Within 24 hours, Michelle had packed a Dropbox folder with invaluable information.  Stephanie met with the teachers this week to plan and they were so relieved and excited to have such wonderful materials to use.   Way to go Michelle.
